A Safe Space.
A safe space for young people seems more and more challenging to come by. Especially when we are unwilling or challenged to talk about sex and sexuality to prepare them to informed and intentional about they ways they engage with their peers. One thing that we believe we can all agree upon is keeping our community safe.
Ananya Aatreya and Gauri Gupta and rising juniors at Interlake High School passionate about their community. Unfortunately, they witnessed one of their classmates be a victim of sexual assault by another student. They were shocked by the school’s lack of response to this issue and came together to protest these unresponsive policies.
Unfortunately, because sexual safety is an extremely stigmatized topic within society, there are very limited resources and information accessible to most people. To address this problem, they decided to create SafeSpace which is an app that provides various services to help protect people from this issue. Their app not only provides self-help resources and greater information about this issue but is also, masked underneath a game, to make users feel more comfortable accessing this information.
Aatreya and Gupta’s vision is to live in a world where everyone, regardless of race, gender identity, and/or sexual orientation, can create safe and healthy relationships with the people they love. We want everyone to feel safe, no matter where they are and have the resources needed to protect themselves, and others, from sexual assault.
We look forward to learning and growing alongside these two change agents as they stand for safety, health and accountability. Stay tuned.
